A giant scouting report on the newest Arsenal player. Looking at the specifics — path, best usage, finishing questions, decision-making, what he’ll add, whether he’s lost a step, and a lot more
I do however hope you’re wrong about him getting the most minutes on the left, Saka needs the occasional rest and Trossard and Martinelli position battle is healthy.
Having read this, I’ll admit I was quite eager to see him come on against the Spuds. He worked hard for the team and just … *looks* so quick. Plus, would you believe it, he won a header!
Great stuff Billy, although I thank you not for starting off with that first-half capitulation against Liverpool in 2014!! Ten years hence, I still haven't fully recovered: it's indelibly ingrained. Much more positively, I have always had a (big) soft spot for Sterling even when an adversary; he's right up there with the premiership greats. And at 30, he's definitely "not done" even with the mileage on the clock. There's only upside to the deal Edu so skillfully put together in those last hours - here's to a beautiful (longish?) honeymoon.
Yes, a very thorough review indeed. You certainly worked hard on the training ground to put in a performance like that on the pitch! There are many reasons to welcome Sterling to Arsenal as a footballer but as a man he is also mature and articulate which I believe will contribute positively in the dressing room. Leadership can be measured in different ways and, as a bare minimum, he will add value as a serial winner at MC. Quite instructive too that Havertz arrived last year as scorer of winner in Champions League Final and Merino this year as a key member of Spain’s Euros success. There is a mental and physical toughness to the present Arsenal squad and Sterling is part of that trend too.
This signing has a very Buffet/Munger vibe to it.
1) Buy fundamentally good assets at cheap prices.
2) Profit.
Great analysis as always Billy, thanks for doing this 🙏
Thanks Billy, great read.

Can’t wait to see him get at some defenses.

He's a block destroyer. Pulls defensive blocks apart from the seams. If he's healthy and assimilates fast, hard not to see him starting.
Amazing as ever!
That last GIF, the goal against Germany, is so good!
I’m excited about the potential here. Let’s hope the chemistry with Arteta brings back his motivation and best form.
One hell of a report. Great work.
One of my favorite players to watch for many years! Arsenal will be that much better with him whether he plays 65 or 25 minutes a game.
I’ve spent the last two hours reading and rereading only two articles. That’s how engrossed I’ve been as a complete amateur to the beautiful game.
